Thank you for this very thoughtful piece! Perhaps the high suicide rate among doctors has also something to do with the way medicine is taught and practiced. As part of what you so aptly called an anti-culture, medicine focuses on the power of individual knowledge and skill and will to combat disease without acknowledging the mystery that life is, the complexity of a human system, the role of spirit in any healing endeavor. So doctors start, after a brutal medical training, with big egos only to find themselves in an impossible race and under threat of being sued. How we practice medicine epitomizes our skewed perspective on life. The hearts of millions of us are telling us now that it is time for massive change toward greater humility, genuine cooperation, and healing the whole rather than focusing on the part.
